BJJ ?!
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art based on grappling and ground fighting, focusing on the skill of controlling one’s opponent through techniques that force him or her to submit. It prides itself in being known as the “gentle art”, allowing a smaller, weaker person to use leverage and submissions (chokes, locks) to defend himself against a bigger opponent. With origins in Judo (Newaza) and Japanese Jujutsu, it has since been adapted and modified by Carlos Gracie and his family to become the martial art it is today.
The popularity of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has been on a steady rise over the years, thanks to the growing audience of MMA. Typical Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu jargon such as “rear naked choke”, “armbar” and “guard” have even become common vocabulary even among non-practitioners.

Historic bjj Carlson Gracie Academy in Rio to shut down by the end of August
Sad news coming from Rio de Janeiro this Monday, August 3.
The historic Carlson Gracie academy, in the neighborhood of Copacabana, is set to close down by the end of the month.
According to GRACIEMAG’s Marcelo Dunlop, the reason for the closure is an offer the landlord received from a religious group to use the space as a church.
The current rent paid by the academy is R$ 2,000 ($600) and the potential new tenants offered R$ 7,000 ($2,100) a month.
Carlson Gracie’s widow, Marly Gracie, who is going through health issues, said she’s not able to run the academy anymore.
The Carlson Gracie Academy, located at 414 Figueiredo de Magalhães Street, 3rd floor, was the setting for the breeding of some of the greatest talents in BJJ and MMA of all times, such as Vitor Belfort, Wallid Ismail, Amaury Bitteti, Paulo Filho, Alan Goes, Murilo Bustamante, Ricardo Libório, José Mário Sperry, and many, many others.
It was also there that the legendary Rolls Gracie taught classes before his death in 1982.
The last training session of at the school is already scheduled for August 25, at 7PM.

NAGA brings No-Gi and Gi grappling back to Utah on Saturday,September 26, 2015.
All divisions will take place on Saturday. Children and teens will compete first. Adult divisions will begin once the children and teen divisions finish. Please visit the website for more information on division start times.
Some changes for 2015 include:
All competitors receive a free t-shirt (to be picked up at the event).
Children and Teens are guaranteed two matches per tournament.
New "Advanced" division for Children and Teens. This division is for those with 2-3 years of grappling experience. It is a good buffer between intermediate and expert.
Earlier division start times. Children & Teens must be registered and weighed in by 9:00 AM.
The registration fees increase by $20 after the pre-registration deadline of September 19, 2015.

Templo Sagrado fecha as portas: o adeus do Clube Carlson Gracie de Jiu Jitsu
Após quase 50 anos de sua fundação, a academia que mais gerou campeões no Jiu Jitsu e no MMA irá fechar as portas. A sede do Clube Carlson Gracie de Jiu Jitsu, localizado à Rua Figueiredo Magalhães nº414, encerrará as atividades no local, ainda sem definição sobre um novo endereço.
Fundada em 1970, a equipe rapidamente se tornou uma verdadeira indústria de campeões sob a liderança do sempre carismático e exigente Carlson Gracie. Neste local treinaram nomes como Rolls Gracie, Serginho Iris (primeiro faixa preta de Carlson), De La Riva, Cássio Cardoso, Ricardo Libório, Allan Góes , Ricardo Arona, Murilo Bustamante, “Bebeo” Duarte, Carlão Barreto, Wallid Ismail, Vitor Belfort, dentre vários outros.
Visionário, Carlson foi o primeiro Gracie a visualizar e investir no Jiu Jitsu como esporte de competição, contrariando a visão de seu tio Hélio, que acreditava que o esporte deveria se manter exclusivamente como defesa pessoal. Carlson também revolucionou o esporte de outra forma, indo além do espírito da “arte puramente suave”, e acreditando que força e preparo físico eram fundamentais para o desenvolvimento do Jiu Jitsu no mais alto nível.
Essa união de vigor físico e alto nível técnico fez o Clube Carlson Gracie se destacar nas competições durante as décadas de 70 e 80, sendo comum que a equipe obtivesse mais pontos do que todas as outras equipes somadas no placar geral.
No dia 27 do mês de agosto de 2015, haverá um grande treino livre no Clube Carlson Gracie, puxado pelo filho do grande Mestre, Carlson Gracie Jr., que marcará despedida deste Templo Sagrado do Jiu Jitsu.
Todavia, por mais haja apego emocional a um local físico, ele é feito apenas de tijolos e cimento. O verdadeiro legado do Clube Carlson Gracie, e tudo que ele representa para o Jiu Jitsu, jamais poderá ser “fechado” ou esquecido. Carlson seguirá para sempre sendo o maior formador de campeões que a arte suave já viu. As medalhas, títulos, histórias e ensinamentos viverão para sempre por meio de seus alunos, fãs e amigos.

On Friday, August 7, 2015, the Vianna Brothers BJJ-MMA Academy will be hosting a Super Competition Class with our good friend and Carlson Gracie Black Belt, Rei “King” Diogo.
We know it’s short notice but we’re conducting this event in an effort to get everyone competition-ready for the upcoming IBJJF Summer OPEN.
