10 Warning Signs of a Destructive & Negative Jiu-Jitsu Academy

10 Warning Signs of a Destructive & Negative Jiu-Jitsu Academy

http://www.bjjee.com/articles/10-warning-signs-of-a-destructive-negative-jiu-jitsu-academy/
By Guillaume (Gile) Huni, BJJ black belt and head instructor of Kimura Academy in Belgrade, Serbia.
Training Jiu-Jitsu should be an enjoyable experience. If you are lucky enough to find the right academy and the right instructor, you will learn how to defend yourself, increase self confidence, make new friends, change your eating habits, compete etc…Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is generally very informal, compared to more traditional martial arts. In most cases student and teachers are on a first name basis, there is not so much emphasis on Eastern style bowing.
The reality is that not everybody will find an BJJ academy that meets all their needs. Some schools are lead by instructors with very little experience and end up teaching a watered down version of Jiu-Jitsu. Even worse, some people end up in a school with an unhealthy and destructive environment where they are bullied, judged, pressured and ridiculed.
Very often, one person is responsible for the overall atmosphere of the academy: The instructor. As a leader they should be able to banish negative and disruptive students to preserve the good atmosphere of the group. An instructor should be courteous, inspire, be a role model and inspire.

Over $16,000 raised for childhood cancer research from Tap Cancer Out Winter BJJ

On Jan. 17 the Tap Cancer Out Winter BJJ Open was held in San Diego, CA. Unlike a regular tournament, competitors could opt for fundraising instead of simply purchasing the registration fee. There were also opportunities to donate and fundraise as an individual and as a team.
In total, the tournament raised over $16,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding childhood cancer research. The top individual fundraiser was Samuel Martinez of Moore Jiu-Jitsu and the team award for fundraising went to The Stronghold. There were 72 fundraisers and 362 donors total and because of this event’s contributions, Tap Cancer Out has now raised over $100,000 for St. Baldrick’s Foundation since 2014.
But it wasn’t only the charity who received donations–the family of Jeremy Montes Jr., a young Jiu-Jitsu competitor who recently passed away from cancer, received $500 from the event via shirt sales by DeuS Fight Co. You can still purchase the shirt here.
The team totals from the competition are as follows:
  1. The Stronghold - 78 points
  2. Checkmat - 52 points
  3. Victory MMA - 45 points
See full list of divisions winners here.

What is bjj Jiu-Jitsu good for?

Please don't assume that Jiu-jitsu is only useful for self-defence, improving your health, increasing strength, developing flexibility, sharpening mental focus, training an army, learning to learn, falling safely, reducing stress, restraining drunken Uncles, improving school grades, developing patience, refining negotiation skills, letting off steam, learning about another culture, getting to know people, avoiding conflict, becoming more reflective, sharpening your reflexes, eliminating back pain, conquering fears, increasing self-esteem, and enhancing your problem-solving abilities just because they are the only things that happened to be on the list.

bjj Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, The Best Therapy In The World!

#bjjworld: Hands down, the best story I’ve ever heard about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was from Royler Gracie.  When asked a question about who Jiu-Jitsu was for, he said without hesitation, everyone.  He said, everyone has stress.  It doesn’t matter if you have stress at work, stress at home, or stress with friends; we all have some stress in our lives.  Because we all have this stress in our lives, we need some sort of stress relief.  He said, Jiu-Jitsu is that stress relief.  There is no better relief from your day at work or problems at home than to come in and train.  Nothing clears your mind more effectively or relieves aggression better than training.
It wasn’t until Royler said this that I realized that he was right.  There is no healthier way to deal with all of the stresses in life than to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  Most people have frustrating days at work or at home and do nothing about it.  They let their aggression build with no outlet for it.  These are the people with crazy road rage or the people who fly off the handle when something seemingly small messes up their day.  These people let all of the stresses in life build and build until they snap.  Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu keeps you sane and helps you deal with all of life’s annoying problems.  If you already train Jiu-Jitsu, then pat yourself on the back and appreciate that you are doing the best thing for your mental and physical health.  If you are not training, then I would strongly recommend giving it a try.  You don’t want all of that aggression to manifest into something worse.  Until then, I’ll be watching out for when you give me the bird on the highway.
