But which Submissions are used the most in MMA?

But which Submissions are used the most in MMA?

Chokes rule the sport’s submission ratio being the rear-naked-choke the most utilized strangle-hold of 2015. Another interesting aspect of the data is the lack of lower limb finishes, as we saw no kneebars, straight ankle locks, heel hooks, calf slicers or toe holds this year. Zero.
Top 5 submissions in the UFC during 2015:Subs-2015
Where the sport of jiu jitsu has grown tremendously in the submission only format in 2015, the majority of submissions registered have come from positional dominance, which also explains why there has been such a lack of successful leg attacks. Here are the total of 2015’s submission finishes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and their ratio:
This is even more interesting when looking at the data from 2014, where we see the same pattern, with the same positions ruling the submission game in the exact same order:
  • 41x Mata leao 43%
  • 13x Guillotine 13%
  • 7x Armbar 7%
  • 5x Katagatame 5%
  • 5x Triangle 5% (+ 2 inverted triangles)
2014 did bring one finish by heel hook (Ian Entwistle over Anthony Birchak), the first footlock since the UFC released Rousimar Palhares, MMA’s most successful footlock specialist in the sport.
Lastly a mention to the promotion’s most successful finishers of 2015. They were (with 2 submissions each):
Warlley Alves, Tony Ferguson, Rose Namajunas, Nikita Krylov, Charles Oliveira, Aljamain Sterling.
With many of our sport’s biggest figures having planned moves to MMA in 2016, names such as Michelle Nicolini,Marcus BuchechaRodolfo Vieira, it will be interesting to see if these numbers will increase when these athletes make it to the big stage.

Anderson Silva vs. Michael Bisping Fight Set

Michael Bisping was already se to face off with Gegard Mousasi at UFC Fight Night 83 at the O2 Arena in London, England, but the card was never announced for a headlining bout. Obviously, it could have been very easy for that fight to slide into the main spot, but it seemed like the promotion was waiting for something bigger. It might have been that they were trying to set up the Silva and Vitor Belfort fight for the card, but it never happened and no one knows why. Well, Silva is going to be not he card and he will finally face off with Michael Bisping.
The biggest thing about the bout being on this card is that it will be on fight pass, but then again it is the way to get people to sign up for the service and neither of these two fighters are really anywhere near a title shot. Silva has two straight losses to Chris Weidman and followed that up with a no-contest over Nick Diaz where he failed a drug test for most likely steroids. He will return a month after his year suspension from the failed test. Bisping himself is riding a two fight winning streak for the first time in years.
He has wins over CB Dollaway and Thales Leites. He was supposed to take on Robert Whittaker a month or so ago, but the bout never came to fruition due to Bisping puling out for an elbow surgery. Before those two wins, he had gone 3-4 with his wins coming over three fighters that are currently not in the UFC anymore. Now, he has a chance to get his biggest win of his career over the former kingpin of the Middleweight division and even though his star has dimmed it would be a huge feather in the cap for the British born fighter who does not have many years left in the promotion before retiring.
It also seems that Gegard Mousasi will remain on the card even though a replacement fighter has not been announced. The rest of the car dis filled out with some semi-well known fighters but no one of worth to the prospect of challenging for a belt in any of there respective divisions. Is anyone actually excited by this bout though?

UFC: RDA demolishes Cerrone early in the 1st round; tells McGregor he owns 155lb division

Champion Rafael dos Anjos was just too much for #2 Donald Cerrone. Early in the first round, the Brazilian landed a jab that immediately made Cerrone’s nose bleed. He followed it with a powerful knee to the body and then a kick to the body that sent Cerrone to the fence. Rafael continued the punishment with combinations of punches that Cerrone had little defense to. After a quick clinch, Cerrone tried to take the fight to the ground, but ended on his knees being punched by the champion. Referee Herb Dean stepped in and called the TKO with only 66s. As Dana White and Conor McGregor’s coach said, the Irish man should be RDA’s next opponent. It’s safe to say Conor will have a tough time doing it. “Hey, Mr. McGregor, I’m the owner of this division. If you want to come here, I’ll fight you in Brazil, in Ireland, wherever. You better stay at 145lb. Im here to stay.”

Aldo’s coach releases open letter regarding Aldo’s recent loss

Andre Pederneiras via Facebook:
I have a deep sense of loss at this moment. Not only because of Jose Aldo’s belt, but mainly because of the lack of respect to our great champion, who maintained the UFC belt for four years and seven months, for seven fights (not counting his almost two years and three fights with the WEC title). I got back (to Brazil) and saw comments from people that certainly don’t know anything about fighting. And if they do, they never got anywhere, because those who achieved something in our sport know how hard is to compete at the highest level, against athletes from all over the world, and defeat them for many years.
When Brazil had no other champion, in a tense moment, Aldo maintained his title. After that, two other Brazilians joined him, maintaining the fame and recognition of the country in MMA. The only thing I ask everyone is respect to our great champion. For those who say it was fixed, I’d rather not comment, because they don’t deserve time and attention.
Last Saturday, Jose Aldo lost his belt in a fight in which he couldn’t show how well trained and prepared psychologically he was. There was no taunting that could enter his head, there was no technical failure, just an unusual blow. A blow like that, connecting in someone’s chin while moving forward, isn’t something that happens all the time. But it has happened with us. If it was the opposite, with McGregor being punched in the chin and Aldo in the eyebrow, we would be calling Aldo a superchampion today, the best of all times, but this is how sports are. Better luck for McGregor, who won and, therefore, is the new champion.
We need to understand that Jose Aldo is a human being subject to defeats, like any other. Those who show up criticizing him should think: this guy came from Manaus to Rio with nothing, to live in a gym, sleep on the mat, and wake up late so he wouldn’t starve since he had no money to have breakfast. He got where he were, always believing he would be a champion, and became one, due to hard work and dedication. The people’s champion.
Would those who are out there criticizing, talking about embarrassment, have the courage to do what he did? I bet not. If they did, they would know how hard is to win in a country where it’s rare to have support to sports. My message to critics is this: get up from the chair, get out from the computer, drop the phone, and do better. We need more people like Aldo and less critics from the couch.
The king has left, but will be back shortly.
Andre Pederneiras, Nova Uniao leader. More than a team, a family!

Scott Nelson Jiu-Jitsu After Dark Podcast Interview

OTM and Lucky Gi founder Scott Nelson joins Jiu-Jitsu After Dark podcasters Jon and Chris for an interview about all things BJJ. First, they obviously talk about the roots of BJJ and the early days of Gi making which led Nelson to create the OTM brand and the Lucky Gi specialty brand as we have entered the golden era of Jiu Jitsu Gis.
They also hit on the modern state of the game with the new competitions that seem to be popping up and as people try to transition it to a fringe sport to more in the social consciousness. Also, they talk about the revolution that has been going on in the Gi market as well as Nelson’s newest foray into helping the BJJ athlete. He has taken care of keeping them in the best Gi possible on the mat but now it is about taking care of their needs off the mat as well.
They talk about the CHIPSA Hospital in Baja California where they treat for all kinds of ailments from alternative cancer treatments to things that affect the normal athlete. This place has revolutionary treatments like ibogaine that has helped many people kick addictions as well, which is all to prevalent in sports with the painkiller addiction that has effect numerous people. Check out this interview to get your share of BJJ nostalgia and what one of the original American BJJ creators thinks the future will look like.
