terere

Former World Champion and BJJ great Fernando "Terere" now living in England still has time for some inspiring words: " Our relationship with Jiu-Jitsu is a lot like love. You have be falling in love with it in order to train hard and be happy training. It is like a personal relationship; sometimes you have a fight and stop for a while, and when you return you don't have the same dedication to repeating the movements and put the necessary effort. You just go back and do some light training and go home tired.

But when your body understands the respect and dedication of learning and getting better each day, it leads you down the path of the warrior. Not only on the mats but also in real life where every day is a battle. Congratulations to all that conquered the black belt and to all that are working hard to get there"

Gustavo Dantas is opening a new Arizona based Jiu-Jitsu

Gustavo Dantas is opening a new Arizona based Jiu-Jitsu academy in February
One of our busiest Instructors in the Jiu-Jitsu Community, Gustavo Dantas, is starting a new venture in his own Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy. Gustavo has been teaching the gentle art at the World renowned Mixed Martial Arts School, Arizona Combat Sports, in Tempe, AZ since October 2000.

The BJJ program has produced over 20 World Championship Medalists, and the MMA program run by his partner, Trevor Lally, has produced world class fighters such as TUF season 8 champion Ryan Bader, TUF season 7 runner-up C.B. Dollaway, UFC middleweight contender Aaron Simpson, and former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner, just to name a few. But after eleven years of hard work, Dantas is fulfilling his teenage dream of owning his own Jiu-Jitsu Academy and focusing 100% in a traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school.

"The reason why I came to the United States was to teach Jiu-Jitsu for a living. I really like MMA, so when my instructor Andre Pederneiras needs any help with fights in the U.S., I meet up with him and do what I can to help out, but I LOVE JIU-JITSU, and that is what I will be doing for the rest of my life!" said Dantas, who is the Nova União leader in the U.S. and the vice-president of the Arizona State Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (AZBJJF).

The school will be opening in February, weeks before one of his biggest events of the year, the 7th AZ International Open, on March 3rd & 4th in Phoenix. "I am a little overwhelmed with the amount of work right now. I am still teaching at AZ Combat until the middle of February, plus working on the tournament, and trying to put everything together for the new school", said Dantas, who won the 2011 AZSBJJF Adult ranking for the third year in a row and the Kids Division Ranking for the first time.

"All my hard work is paying off, I go a lot out of my way for my students and that is a reason why they are getting positive results. When I was younger, I focused a lot on building champions, which I love doing and will continue to do, but I want more. I want to help people change their lives through Jiu-Jitsu, the same way it did for me. I want them to have a better lifestyle and believe in their dreams. It doesn't matter if their goals are sports related or not, they have to go after their goals and martial arts can help you to develop the discipline, perseverance, and dedication that you need to achieve anything you want. I read once that dreams take time, patience, sustained effort, and a willingness to fail if they are ever to be anything more than dreams, and that is what I try to instill in my students."

What’s Carlos Rosado been up to?

What’s Carlos Rosado been up to?
www.graciemag.com
Anyone who crosses paths with him on the streets of Copacabana or in countries like Chile or Argentina (where the photo above was taken) would never imagine the tall fellow with the youthful looks is already over 60 years old.

Able bodied, with a piercing gaze and agile mind, Carlos Antônio Rosado is living proof of the health benefits Jiu-Jitsu provides its practitioners. One of the most dreaded competitors on the scene back in the 1970s, the notorious Carlson Gracie student made of Jiu-Jitsu and physical exercise his chief allies in combating diabetes, a disease he has lived with for the last 30 years without distress and without keeping him from donning his gi and training practically every day of the year.

At his academy, just a few meters from Copacabana Beach, the teacher pays special attention to the children’s classes, with his own grandson counting among his tiny pupils. However, he does have an assiduous group of adults and veterans partaking in the greatest pleasure Jiu-Jitsu avails: well-being.

A deft dancer and the superintendent of the building where he lives, Master Rosado now and again takes trips to teach seminars outside his stomping grounds. On one of them, he took on this mother lioness in Buenos Aires, without fearing the encounter for an instant. When he takes to travel, the academy is left in the hands of his son, Carlos “Massa” Rosado, a black belt of the most technical sort, and like his father, he’s well versed in the facets of Jiu-Jitsu involving self-defense.

Today happens to be the great teacher’s birthday. For his over 50 years sporting the gi, GRACIEMAG.com takes the opportunity to wish him copious amounts of health and an abundance of Jiu-Jitsu.

Master Rosado recently launched his website on the internet.

Dana White: Miguel Torres is back!

Dana White: Miguel Torres is back!
LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Nearly three weeks to the day, former WEC bantamweight kingpin and current UFC bantamweight contender Miguel Torres saw his career come tumbling down around him due to an inappropriate joke he mistakenly tweeted on his Twitter account.

On December 8th, UFC president Dana White stated in an interview with SI.com, that Torres had been cut from the UFC due to the following quote from the TV show 'Workaholics' made on Torres' Twitter page: "If a rape van was called a surprise van more women wouldn't mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises."

Unfortunately, this came on the heels of two similarly controversial comments made by two former UFC light-heavyweight champions. On November 8th, like Torres, Forrest Griffin made a comment about rape on Twitter that was widely scrutinized. It was later explained that Griffin was simply commenting on the fact that everywhere you look in the news these days, there is a sexual assault case being discussed.

The biggest current national case in particular, involving former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, was later referenced on December 7th in a taunt from Rashad Evans toward Phil Davis during a FOX news conference to promote their upcoming bout on FOX in January. Davis is a former NCAA Division I wrestling national champion and graduate from Penn State.

Due to the mainstream media's heated coverage of the comments made by Griffin and Evans, the timing of Torres' "rape van" joke couldn't have come at a worse time. In fact, it came just one day after Evans' comment, which led to the UFC releasing him from the promotion.

After deleting the tweet and issuing a public apology on his personal website, Miguel Torres was very proactive in redeeming himself with his UFC bosses. Earlier today, Ariel Helwani reported on his Twitter page that White announced that Torres is now back with the company during a UFC 141 press conference. Apparently, Torres had donated money to local rape centers and visited them. White also said that Torres was very remorseful, emotional, and handled his business like a man with no one telling him to do it.

Torres then made the official announcement of his return to the UFC by using none other than his infamous Twitter account. Torres' first tweet since the incident went down, confirmed he's back and thanked his family, friends, supporters, fans, management, Dana White, and Lorenzo Fertitta.
